I am being sincere. It's way past time to shake things up and  make a new life.

Jim James' latest is the only song I need for the weekend.

And this is the only video I need for the next week. Today is Day One of juicing and it's going well. My original plan was to try it for three days. I've added seven more to that. Ten feels reasonable. I'll see if I want to go longer when I get further in.

I wasn't prepared for the questions 2012 asked. And my god, the answers.

2013. Lucky 13. It's going to be a good year.

My play lists may appear like an eclectic mix. For me, they are code, personal, cryptic, secret messages.

This play list is a compilation of themes and ideas and issues that are on my mind and in my heart as the new year approaches.

Years ago, I laid my dreams aside, forgot them, and in the process, lost my way. 2013 is the year I forge ahead, remake the world, and do the only thing I was meant to do: Write.

I had a dream years and years ago of standing in a vineyard in Ancient Greece. Two women approached and offered me a maker bead. They told me I was a Maker.

Yes. Yes, I am a Maker. A maker of stories.

When I was a young girl, the practice in my religion that I belonged to was to give patriarchal blessings. The patriarch said it was a man's  blessing, which at the time confused me and terrified my mother. I understand his meaning now - I am to be fearless in my telling. He said I would tell the truth from the mountain tops. Decades later in sweat lodge, the medicine man gave me the same blessing. My truth is story. It is time to tell them.

I am hopeful for the year ahead. I am looking to the original revolution girls, Zora Neale Hurston, Virginia Woolfe, Toni Morrison, Margaret Atwood, for courage to do the work I must. And to myth, especially the reinterpretation of myth in Sophocles' brilliant plays. And to all the writers who have reimagined ancient stories and made them their own, and thus thrown bread crumbs along the path for me to find my way home by the moon's light .

I am ready for the hard work, for the needed changes, the new directions, and the joy that this year promises.

Oh America! You are a steaming post-election hot mess.

All fifty states have petitions for secession now, talking heads are wallowing in lame excuse dredges up to their eyeballs. You know for certain you're a bowl of sour grapes if former First Lady Barbara Bush tells you to stop your whining and move on.

The five stages of grief are: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance.

I'm adding a sixth stage:The Blues.

How about we all agree, there's this last weekend to wallow and wail, and then come Monday, it's a new week? And it is the week of Thanks, (notice the capital "t"?)

I have a great play list all lined up for you. Go ahead, drown your sorrows, but leave the last glass half. Okay? Then, make a pot of black coffee, and sober up. And, remember that a spoonful of sugar will make the medicine go down sweeter.

Here's the thing: Everybody here in these United States, you are mine, and you don't get to go anywhere. We can slam doors, pull hair, spit on each other's laundry, give each other the silent treatment, mutter under our breath, scream and shout, but you need to know, you're still invited to Thanksgiving Dinner. The election if finally over. And it's the weekend. Both excellent reasons to celebrate.

A lot of people are celebrating big. A lot are hurting and angry and scared, because their candidate didn't win.

Many feel that the country has changed, irrevocably.

It has.

And that is what is so great about this country. It's always changing. Always evolving, and sometimes devolving.

Can you imagine what the citizens of America were thinking and feeling about the abolition of slavery or women getting the vote?

I'm certain they thought the America they knew was over. And it was. The country (and its people) reimagined itself as something better.

Watch & Listen Play List: Presidential Election - 6 November 2012

I am headed out to vote in a few minutes, and then I'm going to take my I Voted sticker to Einstein's and get a free bagel schmear.

Later, before I settle in to watch the election results with Diane Sawyer, and also LinkTV, I am planning on picking up a chocolate raspberry concrete with salted almonds.

Let the stress eating begin!

Obama or Mitt, the country will survive. Moreover, we survived two years of relentless campaigning. Everybody in the country deserves a treat!

Watch & Listen Play List: November 2-4

The end is finally, finally here. This is the long hard push weekend before the election.

Next week we will know who will lead the country, and how the next four years will be for its citizens. 

If you've been reading between the obvious lines of my blog posts, I've made it clear I am not a fan of the 47 percent - Russsia is the biggest geopolitical threat - corporations are people - binders full of women - I'll create 12 million jobs/government does not create jobs or legitimate rape - rape thing - something god intended and anti lily ledbetter - outlaw some forms of birth control party.

The party and the guy I'm voting for, well, they're hardly perfect. Hardly. But they have both feet firmly planted in the 21st century. It is my hope there will be tears of relief, joy, and most of all, victory, in the Windy City this Tuesday.

Whatever your hope may be, if you're a fellow American, get out the vote, and happy listening this weekend!

This has been a week of revelations.

As in, politicians and their political party revealing their true nature. Again.

You would think we'd all traveled in a time machine back to circa 2nd Century - 20th Century, with all the ridiculous "news" and "debate" commentary that, women are hysterical, ruled by their wombs and hormones, incapable of making reasoned decisions, so could a benevolent man please show them the way, or take away the ability to make decisions for themselves.

And then the the trump that trumped even the Donald and his hair: God approved assault, and the tacit approval via deafening silence from the man who would be president, and the hoard of all the other gray- faced chumps with two dollar haircuts, who chose to look the other way for the sake of political expediency.

Well, it's enough to make a gal a very cynical and bitter pill.

Instead of staying angry, disappointed, and maybe just a little scared that this kind of talk is actually part of the national discussion (instead of on some loser's Facebook page), that these comments are for the most part tolerated and condoned, despite public outcry, I am going to make some calls, write some letters.

Then, I'm going to put on this play list, click on the noonday collection site and check out artwork by world artisans, mix up my favorite witch's brew of the moment, and cast a spell.

With any luck, by Monday, there will be one hellofa lot of frogs ribbeting without any hope of a princess kissing their warty faces.

This month came in swinging a volley of hard right jabs, didn't it? I've even been having pugilist-themed dreams. In one I wrote a speech for Muhammad Ali. It began, My name is Muhammad Ali. I was a fighter of men. Now I am a fighter of disease.  So why all the boxing metaphors and dreams? I'm guessing one word: debates.

It is hard to believe that October is here, or that snow is on its way.  We're only two months from the new year, or from the Apocalypse, if you believe the Mayans.

If you're following the election at all, the Eye of the Swallow video from Bad Lip Reading is a bright spot of levity. Hilarious!

"A true Arab knows how to catch a fly in his hands,"
my father would say. And he'd prove it,
cupping the buzzer instantly
while the host with the swatter stared.

In the spring our palms peeled like snakes.
True Arabs believed watermelon could heal fifty ways.
I changed these to fit the occasion.

Years before, a girl knocked,
wanted to see the Arab.
I said we didn't have one. 
After that, my father told me who he was,
"Shihab"—"shooting star"—
a good name, borrowed from the sky.
Once I said, "When we die, we give it back?"
He said that's what a true Arab would say.

Today the headlines clot in my blood.
A little Palestinian dangles a toy truck on the front page. 
Homeless fig, this tragedy with a terrible root
is too big for us. What flag can we wave?
I wave the flag of stone and seed,
table mat stitched in blue.

I call my father, we talk around the news.
It is too much for him,
neither of his two languages can reach it.
I drive into the country to find sheep, cows,
to plead with the air: 
Who calls anyone civilized?
Where can the crying heart graze?
What does a true Arab do now?

The dog days came early this summer, then the rains cooled things off, but, it looks like the sweltering heat is here for the duration.

With the election just around the corner, listening to NPR in the car is out, unless I want to twist into a knot. Same goes for the news.

Why am I doing something as antiquated as listening to the radio? I've listened to my playlists way too many times, and I still! haven't signed up for spotify. It is time for a new playlist that fits the temperature and the mood of the times.

Maybe it's time for that road trip, or to get on a plane and take off for a cooler climate. If that's not in the cards for you, you can always take a staycation on the couch and keep your favorite chilled drink company.

It is Independence Day here in the States this Wednesday.

The words independence, democracy, freedom have different meanings depending where you hale from, and that includes right here in my country. Every single one of us, all 313 million, have an opinion, and we so want to tell you about it. Check out You Tube, blogs, websites, twitter, Facebook.

For me, independence has meant something very different with each passing year. Democracy is messy, every voice shouting over the other, but every vote counts, including mine. It is incomprehensible that less than one hundred years ago, in this country, my country, that women did not have the right to vote. Freedom is every American's privilege, and it is our duty to extend those freedoms to all.

Whoever you are, whereever you call home, I hope you'll join me in celebrating the 236th birthday of my country.
