"A kiss is just a kiss," unless it's from Humphrey Bogart (or mygod!) Cary Grant or Javier Bardem or Clark Gable.

Everyone of these actors could win for best onscreen kiss, but it is Clark Gable that wins the prize for best film kiss.

What are your favorite film kisses?

Valentine's Day is next week. I think we spend far too much time focusing only on our partners, lovers, spouses. I think it's a good idea to spread the love this year, so, what I want to do is give a Valentine's to my tribe - my lovely circle of friends and family.

I don't have unlimited funds, so I will have to be creative, as in hurry up and paint or make something to get it in the mail and out on time.

The Day in Cartoons: Lincoln and M.L. King watch over Barack Obama's inauguration - David Horsey

commemorative inaugural invitation

I like inaugurations, regardless of who, or which party is taking the oath of office.

Obama's speech, in its allusion to Seneca Falls, Selma, and Stonewall, put the ALL in the inferred all of the original "all men are created equal."

I watched PBS's Freedom Riders last night and marveled at their courage and at the depravity of their opponents. I haven't experienced struggle or bigotry because of my skin color or sexuality, but I do know what it is to experience sexism. It's infuriating and humiliating and sometimes hilarious and sometimes demeaning, but, it makes me work harder and read more and do more and be more, and, let me tell you, it makes me strive to make the road easier for my daughter.

Men like Obama, and many of my colleagues, neighbors, friends and family, clear the road of rocks for the next generation of women, and by doing so, make the road that much easier to traverse, for all.

This was especially moving and important to hear, ...our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts.

Belated Holiday Card

card front

 card back

 envelope

I sent my holiday cards out very, very late, so I'm posting it late, as well.

This year I made both the envelope and card from collages. The envelope is traditional images of Mary. The card is my interpretation of the traditional Nativity narrative and poem Altars of Light, which serve as a theme for the year.

Altars of Light
Pierre Joris
If the light is the soul
then soul is what's
all around me.

It is you,
it is around you too,
it is you.

The darkness is inside me,
the opaqueness of organs folded
upon organs--

to make light in the house of
the body--
     thus to bring the
outside in,
     the impossible job.

And the only place to become
the skin
   the border, the inbetween, where
dark meets light, where I meets
   you.

In the house of world the
many darknesses are surrounded
by light.

To see the one, we need
the other / it cuts both ways

   light on light is blind
   dark on dark is blind

   light through dark is not

   dark through light is movement
   dark through light becomes,
is becoming,
     to move through
light is becoming,

   is all
     we can know.

What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?

I'm staying in...and making my lucky rice & bean soup.

If you want a lucky 2013, eat rice and beans. I don't know where I got that superstition, but I didn't eat lucky soup last year, and let's just say, it wasn't my year.

So I'm making lucky soup, reading magazines, and writing in my journal listening to jazz (my new favorite music), feels like the perfect way to usher in 2013.

Whatever it is that you're doing, have a happy and safe New Year.

This year's soup is a Hyderabad Vegetable Biryani hybrid. Apropos of nothing, I'm pairing it with tempura shrimp roll and a ginger beer, followed by a red velvet cake bite and a glass of black currant honey wine from the The Hive winery.

(for the wee hours, it's croissants with Italian truffle butter).

After dinner it's magazine reading time, (first on my resolution list is to stop buying magazines!)

Tomorrow I'll work on my new year's collage and resolutions.

Happy New Year!

Listen here, here, here and here.
